An invitation to lavish 1880s New York City tops the DVD releases for the week of Oct. 1.

“The Gilded Age: The Complete Second Season”: From “Downton Abbey” creator Julian Fellowes, HBO’s historical drama exploring the Big Apple’s high society continues to incorporate real-life events such as the rise of unions and the campaign to open the Metropolitan Opera House in its sophomore season.

“A lot of what I initially adored about ‘The Gilded Age’ remains in the second season,” writes The Minnesota Star Tribune critic Neal Justin in his review. “You get the sense that the set designer went the extra mile to get just the right teacups. But the series is starting to show its flaws. … In ‘Gilded,’ the main characters are too busy monitoring their spots on the social ladder to make time for a hug.”

Also new on DVD

“National Anthem”: A young man joins a LGBTQ rodeo team in this drama set amid the landscapes of the Southwest.

“End of the Rope”: Inspired by a true story, this Western set in 1930s North Dakota finds a town pursuing vigilante justice after a family’s disappearance.

“Paramount Scares, Vol. 2”: Collectible box set from Paramount Pictures includes four films spanning the horror genre: “Friday the 13th Part 2,” “Orphan: First Kill,” “World War Z” (including the unrated version) and “Breakdown.”
