Mountain View’s strong second half fell just short in an 20-18 loss to Mountainside on Friday at McKenzie Stadium.
The Thunder scored 18 unanswered points and had a chance to take the lead in the final two minutes. But Cashton Liedtke’s pass was deflected on fourth and 2 from Mountainside’s 7 yard line.
Mountainside of Beaverton, Ore., jumped to a 20-0 lead in the first half. Mountain View (0-4) got a spark when Liedtke connected with Dylan Huber for a 51-yard touchdown with 34 seconds before halftime
Making his first start, Liedtke found his rhythm in the second half and completed 15 of his last 20 passes. He finished 23 for 36 with 226 yards, including 14 passes to Huber for 135 yards.
Jaden Brown rushed for 130 yards including a 28-yard carry that set up Mountain View’s second touchdown. Liedtke scored on a 1-yard keeper two plays later to cut Mountainside’s lead to 20-12 late in the third quarter.
Mountainside threatened on its next drive, but the Thunder defense forced a turnover with Tre’von Hughes-Farmer recovering a fumble at the 8 yard line.
Mountain View mounted a 92-yard drive with Brown scoring on a 20-yard run down the sideline. Liedtke’s pass on the two-point attempt fell incomplete leaving the Thunder down 20-18 with 10:39 to play.
Mountainside (2-2) iced the game when, facing third and 11 from its own 8, Madden Tanuvasa gained 13 yards on an end-around run to set up victory formation.
