Prep highlights: Kelso football shuts out Bremerton

Aden Mintonye’s 8-yard rushing touchdown in Kelso’s opening drive of the second half broke a scoreless tie in Kelso’s eventual 21-0 non-league football victory at Bremerton on Thursday.

After a scoreless first half, Kelso (3-1 overall) opened the second half marching 51 yards on five plays in just 66 seconds to grab a 7-0 lead with 7:44 to play in the third quarter.

Mintonye finished with a game-best 149 yards rushing on 21 carries. He now has an area-best 835 rushing yards through four games. His 32-yard touchdown to open the fourth quarter pushed Kelso’s lead to 14-0.

Of Kelso’s 239 total yards Thursday, 234 came on the ground.

Kelso opens 3A Greater St. Helens League play next week at Evergreen.

Hockinson girls soccer edges R.A. Long

Leeann Williams made 13 saves and helped Hockinson girls soccer earn a win over R.A. Long in a shootout.

After regulation and overtime ended with the teams tied 2-2, Hockinson won the shootout 4-3 to earn two points in the 2A Greater St. Helens League standings.

Teagan Trenda and Kaili Humphrey scored unassisted goals in the first half.

R.A. Long entered the match 5-0 and 3-0 in league play. The Lumberjills are in second place with 10 points, two behind Columbia River.

Stars of the day

  • Grady Millar, Mountain View boys golf, shot 3-under par 31 for the low round in a match against Evergreen at Fairway Village.
  • Broden Toney and Henry Kelly, Mark Morris boys golf, each shot even-par 34 at Fairway Village as the Monarchs improved to 8-0 with a win over Hudson’s Bay.
  • Malea Figueroa, Skyview slowpitch softball, went 2 for 3 with a triple and a double in a 14-1 win over Evergreen as the Storm improved to 8-0.
  • Haylee Delano, Columbia River slowpitch softball, went a combined 5 for 6 with four runs and two doubles in a doubleheader sweep of Battle Ground/Washougal.
  • Kaitlin Simmons, Camas slowpitch softball, went 3 for 4 with two doubles, three runs and two RBI in a 16-5 win over Heritage/Hudson’s Bay.
  • Avery Carpenter, Mark Morris slowpitch softball, went 2 for 2 with two doubles, four runs and two RBI in a 19-9 win over Prairie.
  • Edie Korpi, R.A. Long slowpitch softball, went 4 for 5 with a home run, three runs and two RBI in a 20-5 win over Kelso.
  • Lucas Walburn, Columbia River boys tennis, won in straight sets at No. 1 singles in the Rapids’ sweep of Mark Morris.
  • CJ Moore, Seton Catholic girls soccer, had four assisted and one goal in the Cougars’ 8-0 shutout of Stevenson.
  • Brooklyn Fobi, King’s Way Christian volleyball, had 13 kills, nine digs and three aces in a sweep of Columbia-White Salmon.
  • Teaghan Irvin, Mountain View girls soccer, had both Thunder goals in a 2-1 league win over Kelso.
  • Miriam Madrigal, Evergreen girls soccer, had a goal and an assists in a 2-0 league win over Heritage.
  • Shaylie Haij, King’s Way Christian girls soccer, had two goals and an assist in a 4-2 win over Columbia-White Salmon.
  • Claire Neuman, Prairie volleyball, posted 16 kills, 10 blocks and nine digs in a four-set win over Skyview.
  • Jordis Taylor, Heritage volleyball, had 14 kills and 12 digs in a four-set win over Battle Ground.
