Regarding the article about the homeless camp along the sound wall on West Mill Plain Boulevard (“Vancouver City Council considers problems at homeless camp at Mill Plain sound wall but takes no action,” The Columbian, Sept. 18), I had to laugh as I read the weak responses from Mayor Anne McEnerny-Ogle and the other city council members.
I have to ask these people this one question: How many of the homeless people in this camp pay property taxes?
It’s quite clear the Vancouver City Council has no plan or ideas on how to fix this problem. Meanwhile the health and safety of the citizens who live in downtown Vancouver is under constant threat. Litter, human waste and needles are pretty much the norm for downtown Vancouver.
Ironically, in the same issue of The Columbian was an article on Page A3. You’ll be pleased to know that the city of Vancouver has released its revised plan of the Waterfront Gateway Plaza. Looks swell with lots of open space. They even had a groovy rendering of people enjoying this future utopia. You can bet this area will be free of the homeless. In fact, this is the same area the city booted the homeless from in order to accommodate waterfront developers.
Wake up voters. We need results, not excuses.
