RIDGEFIELD – Junior quarterback Landon DeBeaumont threw for 225 yards and two touchdowns and senior running back Jake Olsen rushed for 105 yards and a touchdown as the Ridgefield Spudders won their home opener 24-21 over the Hockinson Hawks in the 2A Greater St. Helens League opener for both schools.

Hockinson was without leading rusher Xavier Maitland which forced the Hawks (0-3 overall, 0-1 league) to rely on the right arm of senior quarterback Aiden Donowitz.

Donowitz, who threw for just 26 yards in the first two games of the season, passed for 212 yards in the first half completing 10 of 17 attempts. Six of the 10 completions were for 20 yards or more, and two of the six were for touchdowns.

Ridgefield (3-0 overall, 1-0 in league), was also without its leading rusher, senior running back Cly Stephens, for most of the game. Olsen took over the lead running back duties and ran for 92 yards in the first half, including a 64-yard scamper for a touchdown. Stephens would enter the game in the fourth quarter and helped put the game away with 27 yards on seven carries.

The Spudder defense also helped put the game away in the second half. After giving up nearly 250 yards in the first half, Ridgefield’s defense gave up just 72 yards in the second half and only three rushing yards. Junior defensive back Chase Duncan picked off two passes in the second half as well for Ridgefield, who takes on Hudson’s Bay next Friday at Kiggins Bowl.

Aiden Donowitz ended up with 281 yards passing, and senior wide receivers Kyle Alexander and Madsen Richardson had 106 and 96 yards receiving for the Hawks, who travel to Longview to face Mark Morris next Friday.
