Derek White had the game of a lifetime on Friday, but the senior wasn’t about to take all of the credit for his success.

“Everyone did their job,” the senior from Stevenson said. “It was awesome. I wouldn’t have been able to do what I did without (everybody else).”

What White did was score four touchdowns and pile up 265 yards of offense as the Stevenson Bulldogs rolled to a 57-14 win over Fort Vancouver in a 1A Trico League game Friday at Kiggins Bowl.

“He’s fast,” Stevenson coach David Waymire said. “He’s fast, elusive. We have several kids like that. But he definitely got some yardage today.”

White had a 64-yard touchdown run and also caught six passes for 201 yards and three more scores.

Most of his yardage came on shovel pass from sophomore quarterback Jude Travinski.

On the ball, Travinski would fake a handoff to running back Skylar Polzel, then flip the ball ahead to White cutting in front him.

The pass never traveled very far, but White was able to turn them into big plays.

“It worked really well,” White said. “There was a lot of really good blocking, too. It was just me. But yeah, it was great. It was awesome.”

And Skylar Polzel’s hard running drew attention from the Fort defense.

“Definitely Skylar Polzel, he’s a heck of a hard runner,” Waymire said. “And even our tight end, Logan Polzel, he was getting some eyes on him because he was sneaking out on some passes to start out on them.”

Stevenson got the early jump on Fort, as Skylar Polzel rushed for 48 yards on the game’s second play to set up White’s first touchdown reception from 16 yards out on the next play.

But Fort quickly responded with Caleb Hyde hitting Kaden Taylor on a 38-yard touchdown pass to put Fort Vancouver up 7-6 in the first quarter.

But Skylar Polzel’s 3-yard touchdown run put Stevenson back up 14-7, and then the Bulldogs defense effectively shut down the Trappers’ offense the rest of the way.

“I got a little nervous to start with, but that was just start-of-the-game nerves,” Waymire said. “They came out to play this week. They felt like they had something to prove. We felt like last week (a 26-7 loss to Elma) was just a combination of errors. They put in the work this week to fix that, and they did.”

White’s second touchdown — a 71-yard pass play on the first play of the second quarter — put Stevenson up 29-7. And his 64-yard touchdown run on the Bulldogs’ next possession made it 35-7.

Travinski finished with 313 yards on 12-of-16 passing with six touchdowns. Skylar Polzel rushed for 133 yards, and Logan Polzel caught two TD passes.
