The city of Vancouver opened the recruitment process for Vancouver’s next police chief on Thursday, according to a news release.

“Policing in Vancouver continues to experience change, and community safety remains top of mind for many in the community. By conducting an internal recruitment, we are prioritizing continuity, deep institutional knowledge and proven commitment to our community,” incoming City Manager Lon Pluckhahn said in the news release.

Chief Jeff Mori announced in July he intends to retire Oct. 11. Mori said he has endorsed Deputy Chief Troy Price for the top job. Price has been with the department since 1997, when he moved to Vancouver from Chicago.

The city developed an anonymous survey to gather information regarding the attributes and leadership qualities the community would like to see in its next chief, according to the news release. The survey is open through Oct. 4 and is located on the city website, Be Heard Vancouver.

Residents without internet access can call the city at 360-487-8712 to receive a paper copy by mail.

“Our internal candidates are proven leaders and have demonstrated their ability to advance the city’s policy priorities,” Pluckhahn said in the news release. “This process allows us to build on our established foundation while promoting trust, accountability and stability within the department.”

The city will also host a public forum with the finalists as part of the recruitment activities. No date for the forum is set yet.
