Letter: Look for character in leaders

What we all saw on display during the debate was former President Donald Trump showing a lack of honesty, integrity, respect, empathy, and an absence of caring for others, including country. Conversely, Vice President Kamala Harris showed us her strong leadership characteristics.

I remember fondly my sixth-grade teacher. She told us that, “Using a loud voice of anger or profanity in conversations showed a lack of a good vocabulary and a laziness in conveying your message.” I also remember one of my bosses at work who would say, “People don’t remember most of what you say, but they do remember how you made them feel.”

My spiritual compass in making a decision asks me to consider, “What would Jesus do?” We should be looking for excellent qualities of character in the leaders we vote for. We need leaders who put us first in doing the right thing, not striving to always be right. I believe Kamala Harris and Tim Walz, Marie Gluesenkamp Perez and Bob Ferguson exemplify the attributes we need in our leaders.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
