Weather Eye: It is beginning to feel like autumn as overnight lows dip

On Sunday, Vancouver had its lowest high temperature for the month with 67 degrees. Today with light rain and showers moving in undoubtedly, we may record the lowest high temperature again for the month. The last week of summer looks more like fall, folks.

The light rain should be out of the picture later Wednesday and we will stay dry through Saturday. The weekend is still up for grabs for weak weather systems dropping down from Alaska. So a completely dry weekend may not be in the cards. With perhaps a little luck, some models are forecasting a dry and warm weekend. More on that in Thursday’s column.

It is beginning to feel like autumn for sure with overnight lows dipping into the 40s and high temperatures falling short of our average high of 77 degrees. If it remains in the low 60s today, it will be nearly 40 degrees from highs around 100 degrees only 12 days ago. Remember that? Seems like a distant memory to me.

The month of September is still warmer and drier than normal as of Monday. This week’s weather will bring the averages downward with a cool air mass lingering and damp skies today. Autumn officially begins Sunday at the early hour of 5:34 in the morning.

I know one thing; darkness falls much more quickly now, and the sun will be setting before 7 p.m. beginning September 26. We wait until November 3 to go back to standard time and the shroud of darkness more quickly as the sun sets before 5 p.m.

The National Climate Center has issued their outlook for the last week of September and most of October, which calls for equal chances of normal temperatures, but precipitation amounts will be greater than average especially in Western Washington. Oh boy, maybe the fall rains will defy computer outlooks.

The weather folks are already over two weeks into meteorological autumn. I think most of us are ready for the cozy autumn months. The foliage changing into royal colors, fresh snowcapped mountains, a freshet in local streams and salmon making their journey upstream.

All the while the weather will soon begin to dress itself for the occasion with blustery winds, pouring rain and frost on the pumpkin. Yep, I’m ready!
