Ed Hartin, the chief of East County Fire and Rescue, will retire at the end of this year.

He looks forward to spending more time with his wife, Sue, and traveling, he said in a Monday announcement. Hartin has worked in fire services for more than 50 years, with the last two as East County’s fire chief.

East County Fire and Rescue has begun a national search for its next fire chief. The agency provides fire and life-safety services to roughly 10,500 people across more than 60 square miles of southeast Clark County, north of Camas and Washougal. The combination full-time, part-time and volunteer staff responds to an average of 1,100 calls per year.
