Camas football team finds groove in 48-6 win over Clackamas

CLACKAMAS — While Camas football players were wrapped up in celebrating a blowout road win on Friday night, Papermakers coach Adam Mathieson served as the voice of reason.

Whether it’s accomplished by grinding out a game like last week’s 12-6 result over Class 3A Roosevelt, or a more decisive victory, in the case of Friday’s 48-6 win against Oregon 6A foe Clackamas, winning is hard, as Mathieson told players in the postgame huddle, and they should enjoy them no matter how they come.

The Papermakers plan to celebrate each of their successes, but in Week 2 of what they hope will be a long season, they’re also striving to stay even-keel through the ups and downs.

“I think we had some kids that were bummed last week, 12-6, right?” said Mathieson, the Papermakers’ first-year head coach.

“You can’t feel crappy when you win 12-6 and great when you win 48-6, because you can’t beat everyone 48-6. If you live like that, then your season is going to be a rollercoaster of emotion. The goal is, you want to measure against our own performance.”

With a two-game sample size to draw from, the Papermakers can deduce a couple things about themselves.

First, their defense continues to be a stabilizer. In addition to holding Clackamas to just one scoring drive, Camas recorded two defensive touchdowns, including Hayden Ollmann’s 38-yard interception return just three plays into the first quarter.

Second, the Papermakers’ offense is a work in progress. Two of their first three drives ended by failing to convert on fourth down. But after a slow start, they performed in key moments.

Senior quarterback Jake Davidson and senior receiver Chase McGee connected for three touchdowns through the air, two of which came on back-to-back drives to close the second quarter and open the third.

The third quarter 45-yard strike put Camas ahead 27-6 less than two minutes into the half, and the Papermakers tacked on another minutes later when, after turning Clackamas over on downs, senior running back Titan Brody caught a screen pass from Davidson and ran untouched for an 84-yard touchdown.

A 21-point third quarter was capped off by Jared Forner’s 75-yard interception return for a touchdown.

“I think we just kind of got in the groove,” McGee said.

“All of the offseason work is paying off,” Davidson said, “so it’s good to see.”

Brody finished with 178 all-purpose yards, McGee had a team-high six receptions for 85 yards and Davidson completed 11-of-18 passes for 211 yards and four touchdowns.

“It’s going to be a work in progress on offense because the language is new. The way we call plays is new. The terminology is new,” Mathieson said. “So, I feel like we’re just inches away on a few of them, and I feel like we got in a better rhythm in the second half. And, it helps when your defense scores twice.”
