A Vancouver man is being held without bail after investigators say he shot his girlfriend in the face Wednesday outside a Minnehaha-area residence. She is expected to survive her injuries.

Blake D. Reed, 33, appeared Thursday in Clark County Superior Court on suspicion of domestic violence allegations of first-degree attempted murder, first-degree burglary, theft of a firearm and 10 counts of a no-contact order violation.

His next hearing is scheduled for Monday to enter an order to have his competency evaluated, court records show.

The Clark County Sheriff’s Office’s Major Crimes Unit responded about 5 a.m. Wednesday to 4805 N.E. 49th St. Patrol deputies had detained Reed there. Detectives also learned a woman had arrived at PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center with a gunshot wound to her face, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Patrol deputies had responded to the house shortly before 5 a.m. for a restraining order violation in progress. Reed’s father called 911 to report his son was inside his house. Reed’s father has a protection order against him, which he said is because Reed suffers from undiagnosed mental health issues. Another family member also reportedly told Reed’s father that Reed had a gun, court records state.

Reed’s father eventually gave the gun to detectives, and he said he believed Reed had taken it from his house, the affidavit said.

Deputies booked Reed into the Clark County Jail on suspicion of burglary and protection order violations, according to court records.

While deputies were at the house, they noticed a Chevrolet truck parked there, and it was registered to the woman who suffered the gunshot wound. Two of the truck’s windows were shattered, and there was blood inside. Investigators also found a fired shell casing near the driver’s door, according to the affidavit.

When investigators interviewed the woman at the hospital, she told them she was resting in her truck when she heard a pop. She said she felt pain in her face but didn’t know what had happened. She ran from the truck, and her mother picked her up, she said. She was then taken to the hospital, the affidavit states.

In a follow-up interview, the woman told deputies she was at Reed’s father’s house, and Reed was there. She said she left to buy cigarettes and returned to find the house locked, so she rested in the truck. She said Reed had been paranoid lately and talked about feeling like they were being followed by people who wanted to kill them, according to court records.

A neighbor’s surveillance camera captured a figure walking from Reed’s father’s garage toward the truck and the sound of a gunshot. A woman can then be heard screaming. Detectives said there was no discussion prior to the gunshot, according to court records.

Reed’s father said he obtained the protection order about a month ago, but Reed continues to come to his house at all hours of the day and night. He said he doesn’t know how his son gets access to his house because he’s changed the locks and garage code, court records state.

Reed’s father said he was sleeping when he was woken by a scuffle and the sound of Reed banging on his door. He said he eventually got out of the house, and Reed got into the truck. Reed was trying to back out of the driveway, striking other vehicles in the process, when deputies arrived, according to court records.
