Letter: Hamas tactics are the main problem

It is astounding people don’t recognize the existential threat facing Israel: from Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon, Palestinian Islamic Jihad in the West Bank, and Houthis in Yemen — all supported by Iran.

Repeating distorted reports regarding the number of deaths in Gaza, quoting the supposedly neutral Wikipedia, when in fact they are based on Hamas propaganda, does not help to bring this tragic war to an end (“Israeli outrage misplaced,” Our Readers’ Views, Sept. 6). Hamas doesn’t distinguish between civilians and fighters (Israel says that 17,000 are fighters) and exaggerates deaths due to the conflict (including deaths from natural causes, and claiming, unbelievably, that two-thirds of the dead are women and children).

If Hamas truly cared about innocent lives in Gaza, one might ask why Hamas built miles of tunnels to protect its fighters but not one shelter for civilians. Hamas uses civilians in Gaza as human shields — that is the main problem.
