Weather Eye: Time to settle back in to a more normal September weather pattern

Oh my, those azure skies Monday were amazing to look at after days and days with smoky, yellowish gray hues. I can see so clearly now I almost feel like I’m in a different place. Nope, westerly winds aloft have pushed all that smoke and haze away and we settle back in a more normal September weather pattern.

Of course, that means we leave the door open to any weather systems that may wander down off our coastline. Indeed, one does exactly that later today, and we will be blessed with some light rain and showers pretty much all day Wednesday. How much rain do you say? Looking at guidance on Monday, I expect about a quarter-inch of rain in the city and urban areas and maybe one-half inch in foothills.

There is an outside chance of a thunderstorm as cold unstable air infiltrates the atmosphere overhead. And of course, if you get hit with a passing thundershower, amounts could be much higher. The rain will be short-lived and most likely a one-day event with higher pressure inching in behind the front. Thursday through Saturday should remain fair but high temperatures will be below seasonal averages in the 70s.

Looking ahead, another low-pressure system may follow along later Sunday into early next week. Only part of the ups and downs I think the remainder of September has in store for us. I’m ready for fall and many of you are as well.

Our average mean temperature Monday in Vancouver so far this month was nearly 6 degrees above normal. Rainfall was only at 0.05 of an inch but as noted, we will certainly add to that. The highest temperature so far this month was that hot day on Sept. 5 with 99 degrees. The coolest high temperature was some 30 degrees cooler Sept. 2 with 69 degrees. What a contrast, huh?
