Letter: Vote in favor of unity

The 2024 presidential election is not simply about choosing between Democrats and Republicans. No, the choice is much, much bigger than that. And the contrasts are clear, and momentous. The choice this year is between democracy and autocracy, between inclusion and exclusion, between order and chaos, between right and wrong, between truth and fiction, between unity and division.

Similar choices are being made around the world. Results have been inconsistent. In France, for example, the choice was positive. In Germany, not so much. Destructive tendencies always threaten.

Nobody anywhere should ever put party above country, opinion above fact, personality idolatry above social solidarity. Partisanship leads to nothing except fracture. No country can withstand that.

Either this is the United States of America, or it is not. We enjoy generally free and fair elections, though democracy here is a work in progress, and erosion should never be tolerated. Freedom demands eternal vigilance. The decision is up to us, the people. On Nov. 6, we’ll know whether the word “united” still applies.

May we move, not backward, but forward … and united.
