Class 2B powerhouse Napavine handles Hudson’s Bay, 47-7

Napavine played up to its role as a small-school powerhouse in a 47-7 win over Hudson’s Bay on Friday at Kiggins Bowl.

Having reached the last three Class 2B state title games, the 2022 champs got three touchdowns from Cayle Kelly and two from Karsen Denault.

Denault, a first-team all-state receiver, had two catches for 93 yards including a 63-yard touchdown that put Napavine ahead 13-0 on its second drive.

The 6-foot-4, 185-pound senior also retuned the second-half kickoff 78 yards for a touchdown that put the Tigers ahead 40-0 and triggered the running-clock mercy rule.

Napavine outgained Hudson’s Bay 325-66 in the first half and 351-160 for the game.

Hudson’s Bay finished last season 7-3 and tied for second in the Class 2A Greater St. Helens League, but were without two returning first-team all-league linemen Friday. Sophomore A.J. Hatton rushed for a team-high 78 yards on 11 carries.

Aqeel Bauman rushed for 67 yards, including a 1-yard touchdown that put the Eagles on the board with under two minutes to play.
