Letter: Get to know candidates

More people should be attending political events. Local politics have a big impact on local communities, so people should be more intrigued to go to political meetings. The race to become Washington’s 3rd Congressional representative between Joe Kent and Marie Perez is close. Most individuals get their news from online media, so their perception of a candidate could be more balanced. By going to political events people can directly hear from a candidate, listen to their policies, and ask questions of them.

I attended Joe Kent’s meeting at the Ridgefield Library to ask questions. The meeting consisted of him speaking policies, beliefs, and what he wanted to do if elected. There was a Q&A after he spoke. I wanted to ask about student loan forgiveness and his opinion on term limits for people in Congress. He was able to answer both my questions thoroughly with a well-formed response.

I was glad to be able to meet him and get to know him better because then I could make a better voting decision. People should be attending local public meetings, so they can get to know the local candidates.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
