Letter: Fix Electoral College

By Richard Hill, VANCOUVER
Published: October 30, 2024, 6:00am

As we near the end of another presidential election, we are presented again with our unique and dangerous method of electing our president, the Electoral College. The Electoral College results do not represent the will of the people in many elections.

The Electoral College should be revised to better represent the will of the people. Instead of winner-take-all, as in 48 states, the system should better represent the will of the people, as in Nebraska and Maine. In the current system 50.1 percent of the state vote gets all of the electoral votes for that state, leaving 49.9 percent of the people unrepresented.

A better choice would be the proportional assignment of electors. If a state votes 75 percent for one candidate and 25 percent for the other, the Electoral College vote are assigned accordingly (a state with 12 electoral votes would assign nine for one candidate and three for the other).

This is not rocket science. As voters we would all be represented in our choice and our candidates would move away from the extremes to the center that represents the majority of the voters.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
