Letter: Vote to protect abortion services

With the election so close at hand, certain opinions crop up like they do every four years. However, there is one that has been shown to be flatly false in recent years: Because we live in a blue state, abortion is safe.

With the overturning of Roe, the floodgates have opened and attacks on abortion have exponentially increased in number. The truth of it all is that even in a solid blue state, there are many ways anti-choice candidates can skirt democracy and make accessing reproductive health care more difficult without a total legal ban. The president could try to enforce a long-outdated Comstock Act that may prohibit mailing abortion pills or instruments, effectively totally banning abortion.

In Washington, however, there are already institutions such as religious hospitals and clinic networks that refuse to perform this vital service, tying the hands of the health care providers who work for them. Abortion is health care. By electing state and local representatives who stand by while women suffer immense trauma and even death, we make families less safe and healthy. Elect pro-choice candidates by looking for their Planned Parenthood endorsement at https://tinyurl.com/3uj4w8a8.
