Prep highlights: La Center boys dominate at Trico cross country championships

With six runners placing in the top 10, the La Center boys cross country team cruised to the team title at the 1A Trico League championships on Thursday afternoon at Vancouver Lake.

Carter Sherry’s runner-up finish on the 3.1-mile course in 16 minutes, 57 seconds paced the Wildcats, who won the team title with 24 points. The Wildcats went 2-4-5-6-7-8 (following Sherry was Sharpe Young (fourth), Brady Sypher (fifth), Jacob Wasche (sixth), Logan Hubler (seventh) and Lance Cole (eighth) among the top 10. Columbia-White Salmon and Seton Catholic, led by individual winner Sam Soto (16:42), tied for second in the team race with 72 points.

On the girls side, Columbia-White Salmon won the individual and team titles. Lilah Zimmerman won the girls race in 20:06, besting runner-up placer Casie Klein of Castle Rock by 5 seconds (20:11). Columbia-White Salmon won the team title with 36 points with Helen Hoskins (21:16) and Kathryn O’Connor (21:21) placing in the top 5.

Stars of the day

  • Lilah Chase, Seton Catholic girls soccer, had three goals and an assist in a 9-0 shutout of Castle Rock. Cougars clinched the No. 1 seed to districts and can win its first Trico League title in program history with a victory in one of its final two regular-season games next week.
  • Clair Clark, Battle Ground girls soccer, posted 26 saves and allowed just one goal in a 1-0 loss to Camas.
  • Mikayla Boucher, Kelso girls soccer, had a hat trick in a 5-0 shutout of Heritage to lock up the 3A GSHL’s second seed to bi-districts.
  • Paige Hanes, Ridgefield volleyball, tallied 13 kills and five digs in a sweep of Hudson’s Bay.
  • Leeann Williams, Hockinson girls soccer, had 15 saves in goal in a 2-0 loss to Columbia River.
  • Abby Vance, Ridgefield girls soccer, recorded two assists in a 3-1 win over Woodland.
  • Erin Bennett, Evergreen volleyball, had 13 kills, 10 digs and nine aces in a four-set win over Battle Ground.
  • Jordis Taylor, Heritage volleyball, had 25 kills and 22 digs in a four-set win over Mountain View.
  • Tatyana Fobi, King’s Way Christian volleyball, racked up 33 assists, 18 digs, four blocks and three aces in a four-set win over Stevenson.
  • Bella Town, Skyview girls soccer, had both of the Storm’s second-half goals in a 4-1 win over Union.
  • Grace Eaton, Mark Morris girls soccer, posted one goal and one assist in a 2-1 win over Hudson’s Bay.
  • Shaylie Haij, King’s Way Christian girls soccer, recorded a hat trick in the Knights’ 3-1 win over Stevenson.
  • Aly Ordona, Seton Catholic volleyball, had 27 digs, 13 kills and nine aces in a five-set win and reverse sweep of Castle Rock, 16-25, 22-25, 25-13, 26-24, 15-11.
