As out of place geographically as the Lone Star Conference is, Western Oregon has made itself at home.

Western Oregon improved to 5-0 in conference play with a 30-27 win over Texas-Permian Basin on Saturday.

Two players from Clark County had roles in that win. Daron Ulrich Jr. started at cornerback and Jaylen Fite caught two passes.

Ulrich, a redshirt junior from Union High School, ranks fifth on the team with 23 tackles. His three interceptions are also tied for the team lead.

Fite, a redshirt sophomore from Evergreen, has played in five games as part of the wide receiver rotation. He has made four catches for 28 yards this season.

Xavier Owens, a redshirt junior from Skyview, has also played a key role in Western Oregon’s defensive backfield. Though he didn’t have a tackle on Saturday, he has played in all seven games and recorded 16 tackles.

Defending conference champion Central Washington is also in the title hunt at 4-1. The Wildcats and Wolves are in their second year in the NCAA Division II Lone Star Conference, whose other teams are in Texas and New Mexico.

Western Oregon and Central Washington joined the conference after Simon Fraser ceased playing football, leaving the Great Northwest Athletic Conference with only two teams on the gridiron.

Here’s how other collegiate football players from Clark County at four-year programs fared. (Blank signifies a bye week).
