Letter: A public service announcement

By James Ault, Vancouver

Before we proceed with today’s Letters to the Editor, it is important that we acknowledge that this city and state have been formed on stolen land. During the last Ice Age, about 13,000 years ago, Siberian Asians traversed the Bering land bridge with Alaska and settled in this hemisphere. This Clovis culture with its distinctive arrow and spear stone points was first to occupy the land we now call home.

Before European explorers, before modern-recognized tribal groups, before even subsequent Eurasian migrations, the Clovis culture had a presence on this continent. No other claim to this land predates the Clovis people’s. Any subsequent homesteading is a violation of Clovis rights and is merely an occupation on stolen land.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
