CAMAS — When watching an Adam Mathieson-coached offense, innovation comes to mind.
This isn’t new. In 15 seasons leading Mountain View prior to arriving at Camas, there was plenty of it. More often than not, the starting quarterback was a top rusher.
This is the point of the story where Camas senior quarterback Jake Davidson enters the chat.
In Friday’s 63-7 victory over Battle Ground at Doc Harris Stadium, it marked the second consecutive game the senior scored a rushing touchdown. He took a power-option play 20 yards untouched after the line of scrimmage for the third Camas touchdown of the first quarter in a game the Papermakers scored points on every possession. In all, Davidson accounted for five touchdowns Friday, including four touchdown passes to Chase McGee (57 and 39 yards), Nikko Speer (1), and Thor Brody (15), to push his season total for touchdowns to 28.
But back to the rushing conversation. Davidson is approaching 200 rushing yards, second-best on the team, but is the team leader along with Beau Harlan in rushing touchdowns.
“That’s freaking awesome — are you kidding me?!,” said Harlan, who added a 10-yard second-half score. “He’s special and our offensive line is special, too. They allow that to happen.”
It’s all part of big offensive outputs for Camas since its 12-6 season-opening win against 3A Roosevelt when it scored two touchdowns. Since that game, Camas (7-0 overall, 1-0 league) has averaged 46.5 points per game.
What makes this offense so fun? Brody, a sophomore, explains.
“You’re always moving,” he said. “All of our guys are playing all around. You never stay on one side, you’re always moving around and moving in motion. We love it. There’s a lot of planning and preparation that goes into it, but we’re getting it done.”
Brody had three touchdowns Friday — the team’s first (15-yard catch) and last (40-yard run) touchdowns of the game, and in-between, a defensive play that pushed Camas’ lead to 42-0 just seconds into the third quarter. A forced fumble by the Papermakers on Battle Ground’s second-half kickoff led to Brody’s scoop-and-score for 15 yards.
Battle Ground (3-4, 0-1) had the game’s longest touchdown when Trent Richardson’s 70-yard strike from quarterback Seth Waldal got the Tigers on the board. Waldal, a sophomore, got the start in place of the injured Ethan Adams.
The 63 scored Friday is a season-best, but the Papermakers know their ceiling hasn’t been reached on offense or defense. They continue 4A GSHL play next week at Union.
“We’ve been so disciplined recently, it’s crazy,” Harlan said. “We’ve been locking it in at practice and it’s led to the scoreboard over there, 63-7.”
