Weather Eye: Do you remember our last 80 degree day in area?

I think we all would agree it sure feels like autumn outside now. Refreshing rain showers moved through the county Tuesday and again Wednesday. They are also in the forecast for today as well. With sunbreaks, a thunderstorm could develop. Cold air aloft will ensure the showers will be in the form of snow in the higher Cascades.

On Friday and Saturday, we have a break in the action with fair weather before more rain is forecast to develop Sunday. Pumpkin patch Saturday or bust! Is 70 degrees for a high temperature Saturday possible or wishful thinking? How about this, do you remember our last 80 degree day?

The full hunter’s moon was in the sky at 4:26 a.m. this morning and if you missed it, we have another opportunity to see it tonight into Friday morning. Of course, we need the clouds to disappear and with a showery atmosphere that is totally possible, especially as higher pressure builds inland early Friday and the showers pass to the east.

According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, “The hunter moon marked the beginning of hunting season and signaled hunters to begin preparing for the approaching cold.” If you remember last month’s full moon was the harvest moon and with the full hunter’s moon, hunters can spot animals scavenging food for winter. This month’s full moon is also a supermoon being at its closest point in its orbit to Earth and will be the biggest and brightest supermoon of the year.

Remember if you want to see what some experts have to say about our upcoming winter, attend the free presentation at OMSI in Portland on Saturday at 10 a.m. It is hosted by the Oregon Chapter of the American Meteorology Society. I’ll share these forecasts in my future columns in case you cannot attend.

Rainfall for the month as of early afternoon on Wednesday here in Vancouver totaled 0.60 of an inch compared to the normal of 1.50 inches. Vancouver received about one-third of an inch of rain into early afternoon Wednesday, while a half-to-one inch fell in our north county regions and the foothills.

Looking ahead to next week I see no heavy rains and no warm weather either. Oh, the 80 degree day? October 7th. It seems so long ago.
