Letter: Vote to defend democracy

Voting is our right and privilege and our voice to help shape a promising future. We are at a crossroads this election. No candidate for public office is ever 100 percent ideal. We are human and each of us has strengths, weaknesses and biases.

We are voting for two very different paths forward — democracy vs. authoritarian; love of country vs. love of self; leadership vs. dictatorship; chaos vs. calm; rule of law vs. arbitrary use of power; civility/decorum vs. impropriety; truth vs. falsehoods; unity vs. divisiveness; impartiality vs. partisanship; humility vs. vanity; compassion vs. indifference; respect for all people vs. disdain; kindness vs. cruelty; protection of voting rights vs. voter suppression; protection of a woman’s right to make decisions about her body vs. legislative restrictions; and care of our planet vs. environmental degradation.

The United States is the world’s greatest democracy. Let us strive to live up to and preserve the values and freedoms established in the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

Let’s choose democracy! As Lincoln so eloquently stated in his Gettysburg address “… and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the Earth.”

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
