Two students died in 24 hours at Western Washington University, the university reported, although the deaths do not appear to be connected.
The university, in a news release, said law enforcement have found “no initial indications of foul play” and there was no danger to the broader community.
The first student died Wednesday night after an apparent fall from Nash Hall, a residence hall, university President Sabah Randhawa said in a campuswide message. First responders arrived to the on-campus dormitory around 10:30 p.m., the university said.
Dr. Aldo Fusaro, the interim Whatcom County medical examiner, said the deceased was an 18-year-old student who died by suicide.
The second student was found unresponsive Thursday morning in Alma Clark Glass Hall, another dormitory, according to the university. Fusaro said she was an 18-year-old student who likely died of a drug overdose.
The two buildings are about a half-mile apart on the Bellingham campus.
Absent permission from the students’ families, the university will not share more details about either death until investigators complete their work, Randhawa said.
“No words can capture our shock and sadness at these two heartbreaking events, and our thoughts are with the loved ones of our students as their lives are forever changed by their losses,” he wrote.
University counselors will provide support across the campus to anyone who is struggling, Randhawa said, and the school’s wellness center was ready to support anyone impacted by the deaths. The office is available 24 hours a day. Students may call 360-650-3164. Employees may call 877-313-4455.
