Letter: Only hope is to defeat Trump

By Howard Meharg, VANCOUVER

The outlandish things Donald Trump has done and said continue to have little influence on his followers. He knows that. Doesn’t care. Republicans who remember the days of reasonable people espousing a reasonable political viewpoint … that train has long ago left the station.

Religious right advocates are not moved by his character flaws. They know them and he knows that. Only one thing is important. They believe that God is using this imperfect man to allow this nation to “return” to becoming a Christian nation.

The “victory” of which they speak brings a horrendous outcome. The Enlightenment, which influenced the founders of the nation, advocated democracy, individual liberty, freedom of expression, and eradication of religious authority. This thinking was influenced by those who could see the havoc brought about by the combination of religion and government as seen in Europe.

Project 2025 outlines the plan for a “return” to a Christian nation, something we never were and should never be. All religions should be free to worship as they please. Christians advocating the tenets of Project 2025 flirt dangerously close to dictatorship. Our only hope is for a resounding defeat for Donald Trump and his fellow candidates.
