KENNEWICK — Washington is full of towns and cities worth visiting, whether you’re two towns over or across the state. From ski towns to tiny communities in the forests, from ghost towns to rapidly growing cities, Washington has it all.

Some of these destinations are more popular than others, particularly around special occasions. Central Washington’s Bavarian-inspired village is a highly popular and well-known place, especially around the winter holidays. But it’s also known for its Oktoberfest celebrations.

In fact, Leavenworth in Chelan County has been named one of the best places for Oktoberfest celebrations in the U.S.

Best Oktoberfest celebrations in America

According to travel site Visit USA Parks, there are seven places in America with the best Oktoberfests in the country. The list includes several Bavarian-inspired towns, like Frankenmuth, Michigan at number one, Helen, Georgia at number five, and Washington’s own Leavenworth at number six.

It also includes big cities that transform for the occasion, like Cincinnati’s annual Oktoberfest Zinzinnati at number two and Denver at number seven.

The list mentions Leavenworth’s beginnings as an Alpine village, a rebrand following the economic lows of the depression that hoped to increase tourism. Since then, seasonal celebrations have been part of the town’s agenda, including Maifest and Oktoberfest.

Oktoberfest in Leavenworth

Over time, the Leavenworth Oktoberfest celebration has become bigger and more popular. This year, it’s being held during the first three weekends of October, on Friday and Saturday. Pre-sale tickets have sold out, but limited day-of tickets are set aside each weekend. The box office for day-of purchases opens at 5:30 p.m. on Fridays and 11:30 a.m. on Saturdays.

Admission includes two venues and three stages, with plenty of live music, food and drink options and various vendors. There’s also a kiddie area, Kinderplatz, that features bouncy courses, a Ferris wheel and root beer floats. However, strolling through downtown is still free, and many establishments have their own events and offerings for the occasion.

Dance to a polka band and check out traditional Bavarian music, try one of the beer options in a special Oktoberfest stein, or visit the vendors in between stages. There’s plenty to do at Oktoberfest in Leavenworth.

More about Leavenworth

It’s no surprise that Leavenworth brings in an estimated three million visitors per year, according to the city administrator, quoted in a recent story in the Leavenworth Echo. Ever since the rebrand in the 1960s, the Alpine village aesthetic has served the city well.

It’s especially popular during the holiday season, when lights are up and trees are decorated, with ski options nearby. The city has many lodging options, but also makes a fun day trip when possible.

But before the snow hits, there are many other recreation options in Leavenworth, from revered bike trails and hikes to ziplines and rock climbing options. Not to mention the numerous wineries and tasting rooms to check out.
