A rupture in a natural gas main at the intersection of 112th Avenue and 18th Street in east Vancouver forced road closures Thursday, according to a Vancouver Fire Department statement.
The fire department was called to the intersection about 2:20 a.m. Thursday.
NW Natural gas is handling the repairs.
Vancouver Fire Department spokesman Pete Adams said it’s not certain when the leak would be repaired or when the intersection would reopen. It was still shut down as of Thursday afternoon.
“There was a contract company doing some road work,” Adams said. “They hit a 4-inch gas line that ruptured and basically resulted in the fire department having to shut down that intersection.”
No one was injured.
The fire department took several calls about a sulfur odor in the area, Adams said. A hazardous materials team was dispatched as well, just in case.
Authorities warned that the public may continue to smell the sulfur odor for some time, due to the size of the leak. Consider avoiding the area and taking alternate routes during the closure.
