Evergreen’s offense didn’t have much going for it on Thursday, except for Terrance Saryon.

But that proved to be more than enough.

Saryon caught nine passes for 282 yards and five touchdowns as the Plainsmen rebounded from a slow start to roll past Shelton 39-5 in a 3A Greater St. Helens League game at McKenzie Stadium.

“They were playing man coverage, and he was getting one-on-one,” Evergreen coach Christian Swain said. “That was kind of your get-out-of-jail-free card. You could throw it up to him because you know he’s going to go get it.”

Saryon’s performance made Evergreen fans forget about how badly things started for the Plainsmen.

On Evergreen’s first play on offense, the Plainsmen fumbled the ball over to Shelton.

On their second play on offense, they got tackled in the end zone for a safety.

Those were the Plainsmen’s only two offensive plays in the first quarter as Shelton held the ball for 11:48 of the first 12 minutes of the game.

“We just came out sloppy,” Swain said. “I don’t know how else to describe it. I was frustrated. We were starting some seniors that don’t play a whole lot, but we still had a lot of our normal starters out there. We missed some blocks early, fumbled, and then couldn’t get off the field early in the game. It’s just felt kind of sloppy and clunky.”

Saryon got Evergreen going early in the second quarter, when he took a short pass and raced 59 yards for a touchdown.

Then the defense pitched in. Sammy Alanis returned an interception for a touchdown to put Evergreen up 13-2.

Two plays later, Jaysuan Scott got an interception. Then on the next play, Saryon pulled in his second touchdown pass, this one from 30 yards as Evergreen scored three touchdowns in less than two minutes.

Saryon added his third touchdown catch — from 11 yards — to put Evergreen up 26-2 at halftime.

Shelton must have watched last week’s film closely as Evergreen rushed for 228 yards, because the Highclimbers stacked the box to stop the run.

And it worked, as Evergreen had minus-8 net yards rushing.

But it left the secondary without much help on Saryon, and the junior made Shelton pay.

The closest the Highclimbers came to scoring a touchdown in the second half came when they got stopped on fourth-and-goal at the 4-yard line.

Evergreen quarterback Jayden Baum then launched a ball deep downfield which Saryon hauled around midfield for a 91-yard touchdown pass play early in the fourth quarter.

The junior receiver added a fifth touchdown reception with a 38-yard grab with 7:15 left.

Still, Swain would like to see a more complete effort from the Plainsmen next week when they face Prairie.

“It’s always good when you still win 39-5, and you’re still able to make plays, score points and get stops,” Swain said. “But our team is better than the way we played tonight.”
