Letter: Republicans undermine democracy

Donald Trump is not just another president who was voted out of office. His sway over the GOP has permanently transformed the Republican Party’s culture. Donald’s authoritarian tendencies have changed the GOP into an authoritarian cult marked by an aggressive and unapologetic effort to banish dissent. Trump’s big lie is the false claim that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from him by a bogus claim of voter fraud. The big lie has maintained Donald’s cult.

But it gets worse. Election integrity is now a Republican Party buzzword, and across America Republicans in state legislatures are introducing and passing extreme anti-democratic voter-suppression laws. The GOP is trying to steal elections by making it hard for the Democratic base to vote. In short, Republicans want to destroy America’s democracy.

A Republican takeover in November would be catastrophic. But history shows that ballot-box defeats alone don’t stop authoritarians. They don’t have good endings, and they don’t leave properly. It may take prosecution and conviction to deflate Trump’s personality cult. Yeah folks, it’s “lock him up.”
