Prep highlights: Columbia River volleyball rallies past Ridgefield in five sets

This clash of 2A volleyball titans delivered on drama.

Reigning state champ Columbia River rallied from a 2-1 deficit to edge rival and state runner-up Ridgefield in five sets on Wednesday.

After sweeping the Spudders in their first 2A Greater St. Helens League match on Sept. 17, River got a much tougher test at home.

After dropping the third set 25-13, the Rapids found themselves in a 2-1 hole. But Columbia River won the fourth set 25-22 and the decisive fifth set 15-11 to improve to 10-2 overall and 9-0 in league play.

Sophomore outside hitter Sophia Gourley led River with 27 kills and added 22 digs. Senior captain Sydney Dreves had 21 kills and 30 digs while setter Avery Seley had 56 assists.

Ridgefield (8-3, 7-2) dropped the first set 27-25 before taking the second 25-19.

Ella Burke led Ridgefield with 25 kills while fellow sophomore Paige Hanes had 21 kills. Setter Callie Curran had 57 assists and Tava Whitlow collected 26 digs.

Stars of the day

  • Tate Armstrong, Mark Morris boys cross country, was the fastest runner as the Monarchs won a meet with Hockinson and Woodland with 24 points. He covered 5,000 meters at Hockinson Meadows in 16 minutes, 29 seconds.
  • Lyla Taylor, Hockinson girls cross country, ran 5,000 meters at Hockinson Meadows in 19:20 to win and lead the Hawks to victory in a meet with Mark Morris and Woodland.
  • Tori Lasch, Ridgefield girls soccer, scored two goals and had an assist in the Spudders’ 3-1 win over Hockinson.
  • Karsyn Ross, Kelso girls soccer, scored all three goals in a 3-1 win over Prairie.
  • Jordis Taylor, Heritage volleyball, had 21 kills, four aces and 12 digs in a four-set win over Evergreen.
  • Lila McGeachy, Camas girls swimming, the senior won the 100-yard breaststroke, the 200 individual medley and was on two victorious relay teams in a meet at Mark Morris.
  • Ciaran Bell, Washougal boys tennis, came back from losing the first set to win at No. 3 singles 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 and help get the Panthers a 4-2 win over Ridgefield.
  • Karmynn Petrisor, Kelso slowpitch softball, went 3 for 3 with two triples, a home run, four RBI and scored there runs in a 13-1 win over Evergreen.
