Weather Eye: October offering pleasant autumn weather so far

Our fine October weather continued Monday with highs around 80 degrees after a weekend with high temperatures above average in the 70s. Usually there are no guarantees for a completely dry weekend in October. Looking ahead to the upcoming weekend we may see a repeat with dry weather and highs in the low 70s. That would be remarkable.

We do have a risk of a little moisture today and Wednesday as weather systems continue their onslaught through southern Canada. Any rainfall would be rather benign and barely enough to wet the streets from what I looked at Monday writing my column. The best chance of measurable rain is forecast once again on Friday.

Last Friday, Vancouver picked up one-third of an inch of rain with higher amounts north and east of Vancouver. It is unknown at this point how much rain will fall this Friday. If the weather front holds together, it may be a repeat of last Friday. We’ll update the forecast later in the week.

Regardless, the month of October has offered pleasant autumn weather, and the countryside is showing the change of the seasons. Take a drive around the county this weekend and look at the brilliant red and yellows mixed in the canopy of the evergreens. Gorgeous.

I want to thank readers for sending their woolly bear reports to me. I am amazed how consistent the color bands are this year. Hardly any narrow middle orange bands indicating a cold winter. Maybe we will get lucky and have a mild winter.

The warm weather has enhanced those lousy stink bugs adhering to the windows and siding of our dwellings. Seems like an annual occurrence nowadays and I hate it when one manages to get inside. A little frost will deter the critters, however, no killing frosts on the horizon.

I’m pulling up my plants in my garden as I’m tired of watering as there isn’t enough rain falling to keep them adequately watered. Coupled with the cool nights, vegetable production is slowing down. This will help me get more into the autumn feeling with less outdoor work and a job accomplished before the fall rainy season hits.

Enjoy the week and perhaps make plans for the pumpkin patch as this weekend weather looks like a go.
