LA CENTER — One good week of practice can do wonders, even for an undefeated team.

Senior running back Isaac Chromey rushed 228 yards and three touchdowns, all in the first half, as the La Center Wildcats dominated Castle Rock 48-13 in a Trico League matchup Friday night.

Chromey scored on runs of 36, 46 and 12 yards for the Wildcats (5-0, 3-0 Trico). He gave credit to a solid week of practice and an offensive line that created the running lanes.

“We just had a lot better week of practice,” Chromey said. “Tonight we started out hot and kept going. And my line was blocking really good.”

Chromey pointed out Mason Klein, Lincoln Cooley and Max Cooke up front.

“Thanks to this guy,” Chromey said, motioning to Cooley, “we pounded the rock in the first half.”

Cooley added that the key element to a successful run game is no blown assignments.

“You just have to get your kick outs and do everything right,” he said.

It all added up to 336 rushing yards for the Wildcats and five rushing TDs. Quarterback Wyatt Eiesland had TD runs of 10 and 4 yards, also in the first half.

Castle Rock (3-2, 1-2) was its own worst enemy to start the game, turning the ball over three times that led to three La Center touchdowns.

The Rockets fumbled away the ball on their first play of the game and La Center scored two plays later on Eiesland’s 10-yard run, that was set up by a 20-yard rush from Chromey.

The next possession for the Rockets was also brief as Parker McKinney intercepted Castle Rock quarterback Trevor Rogen on the first play, and again, two plays later, Chromey was in the end zone after a 36-yard run to make it 14-0.

Possession No. 3 for the Rockets lasted four plays, but ended in an interception by Chromey, who then scored six plays later for a 21-0 advantage.

La Center increased its lead to 41-0 on a 1-yard pass play from Eiesland to McKinney with 2:12 to play in the half.

Castle Rock was finally able to answer, scoring on a nice 22-yard pass play from Rogen to Owen Langdon. That score with six seconds to play in the half ended La Center’s shutout streak at 13 quarters.

La Center would add one more TD with a 61-yard drive to start the third quarter. Eiesland went 6 for 6 passing on the drive, capped off with a 3-yard TD pass to Houston Coyle.

Now the focus turns on, well, staying focused with games against Fort Vancouver (0-5) and Stevenson (2-3) upcoming.

“We can’t take opponents lightly,” Chromey said. “We need to come out hot and put it to them early.”
