Letter: School creates noise pollution

Columbia Valley Elementary School was built behind my backyard two years after we moved here. It was decided at that time to place the playground only 50 feet behind my backyard without erecting any kind of noise barrier between us. Because of that, we are subjected to constant noise and screaming coming from the schoolyard, Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

And that is not the only noise. Last summer, there was a lot of construction noise. There are few times when it is quiet in my backyard so I can enjoy it. Or inside the house.

Occasionally their generator goes off all night or during the day and the hum wakes us up or doesn’t allow us to sleep at night.

I called the city for noise enforcement with no avail. I also contacted the Evergreen Public Schools, and while I received apologetic replies every time, the noise barrier I suggested is still not built.

We have a right to enjoy our home and backyard and we don’t want to have to move. Besides, who would be crazy enough to buy a home next to this noisy school? As taxpayers, we should have peace and quiet to enjoy our home and backyard.
