Prep Roundup: Mountain View boys basketball hangs on for season-opening win

Malcolm Weatherspoon scored 17 of his 21 points in the first half as Mountain View boys basketball held on for a 59-56 season-opening win over Rogers-Puyallup on Saturday.

Weatherspoon had 12 points in the first quarter to spur the host Thunder to a 40-25 halftime lead.

Rogers pulled within 54-49 entering the fourth quarter. Ryan Avary scored 12 of his game-high 25 points in the third.

Tre’von Hughes-Farmer added 10 points for Mountain View.

UNION 50, GRAHAM-KAPOWSIN 41 — Kody Holcomb scored 10 points to lead a balance attack by Union as the Titans won their season opener.

Holcomb and Daniel Kirichenko each scored five points in the first quarter as the Titans jumped out to a 20-13 lead. Union then kept Graham-Kapowsin at bay the rest of the way.

Drew Hill and Pat Howe added eight each for Union.

FORT VANCOUVER 62, TENINO 42 — Josiah Jointer scored 21 points as the Trappers opened the season with a non-league win.

Liam Cvitkovich added 13 points and Isaiah Barajas added 12 for Fort, which jumped out to a 35-19 halftime lead.

Girls Basketball

YELM 35, HOCKINSON 24 – Dannika Grant had eight points and seven rebounds as the Hawks opened the season with a road loss.

Freshman Charlotte Newton had a team-high 11 rebounds and four of Hockinson’s 20 steals.
