Letter: Some candidates are not palatable

“Politically palatable” — I encountered this term the other day and recognized it as what we had been hearing among all these state and federal campaigns. Thinking back upon what I heard, I realized that politicians pretty much pass out politically palatable statements, like lower taxes, reduced consumer costs, more efficient government, nothing is your fault and we will fix all your problems.

At best, some of these statements are semi-truths, at worst utter fiction, but we like the message and, by gum, that’s who we elect.

Will we ever elect people that tell unvarnished truth, that address the most serious, difficult problems that face the country and (God forbid!) call for some level of sacrifice from each of us to deal with those problems? No? Then climate change will continue to worsen, national debt will deepen and economic wealth will become increasingly lopsided.

And if you think we are having fun now, imagine what our following generations will have to deal with. Sorry if that sounded politically unpalatable.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
