Of all the American freedoms, none is more sacred than freedom of speech; it’s deliberately listed first on the Bill of Rights.
Tyranny begins when the right to speak ends because there is no free speech without a speaker who is free to speak. We should all be concerned that “very fine people on both sides” is protected, but “stop bombing babies” isn’t. By targeting specific speech, Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, along with most of the U.S. political establishment, has lumped First Amendment free speech in with the vile antisemitism of those who wish to undermine human rights everywhere. Palestinians have the right to exist, and saying that out loud is neither antisemitic nor a terrorist ideology. Further, nonprofits who say “stop bombing babies” are not supporting terrorists.
The U.S. political establishment is working to enact content-based censorship and destroy the First Amendment. H.R. 9495 is blatantly unconstitutional, yet Perez violated her oath to uphold the Constitution when she voted “yes” on this bill last week. The House is set to reintroduce it this week. If passed, Donald Trump will use this bill to crush dissent and destroy free speech. Will she betray us again?
