Gardening with Allen: Poinsettias can last for months

I see poinsettias in stores already. If I buy one now, will it last through until New Years?

Poinsettias, with proper care, can continue to be colorful for two months or longer.

The poinsettia has been the favorite Christmas flower for many years. Where it grows native in the tropics it blooms naturally shortly before Christmas in response to shortening day length. In the U.S., poinsettias are grown in greenhouses where they can be forced into bloom much earlier than normal. Growers shorten the normal day length by covering the plants with black cloth in the afternoon.

Not only are modern poinsettias lasting longer, but they are available in an increasing variety of types and colors. In addition to pink, white and deep crimson, there are bicolor patterns available. When I was in Israel a number of years ago, they were selling pink poinsettias in late spring.

To see the full range of what is available I would recommend that you visit a nursery or greenhouse that actually grows their own plants. You will also be able to make sure that the plants have not been mishandled on the way from the greenhouse to the store.

The two main causes of premature leaf and flower bract drop on poinsettias are cold shock and overwatering. Poinsettias can be damaged by extended temperatures below 50 degrees. They can be damaged when moving from truck to store. When purchased in a store when temperatures are below 50 degrees outside, they should be covered on the way between store and car. They should not be left in a car for long periods while you do other shopping.

Poinsettias are grown in pots with holes for drainage. Then they are usually wrapped with colored foil around the pot. If watered too heavily, water accumulates between the pot and foil. This extra water is reabsorbed by the soil. If there is a constant supply of water due to overwatering, the large soil pores fill with water and the soil does not retain enough air for root growth. Roots need oxygen from soil air to function. If roots do not get enough air, they will be damaged. When roots are damaged, loss of flower petals and leaves soon follow.

It is best to remove the foil when watering and replace it after water has finished draining from the pot. You can also punch holes in the foil and use a saucer to catch the draining water.

Strong light will also increase the life of poinsettias. Placing plants near a window or under a lamp, even part of the time, will increase their useful life.
