History has repeatedly been made in Seton Catholic athletic programs this fall.
The latest entry in the history books was the No. 2-seeded girls soccer team securing the program’s first trip to the Class 1A state semifinals with a 1-0 quarterfinal victory over No. 7 The Bush School Saturday.
The win moved the Cougars to a perfect 21-0 overall this season and brought them two wins away from a state championship.
“We’re not used to this, so coming out big was really nice,” junior Hailey Herboth said.
Seton got the game’s lone goal out of the way early.
Herboth teed up what teammate GG Lougen called one of her patented “wicked” corner kicks. And it was Lougen herself who finished the job, tapping the ball in to give Seton a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute it wouldn’t relinquish.
“It’s just stuff we practice,” Lougen said. “It’s just getting there (and) following.”
The pair almost linked up for a second goal five minutes later, but a Kaia McCready save for Bush kept it a 1-score margin.
Seton goalkeeper Hailey Hammerstrom came up with a key save in the 33rd minute to keep Bush off the board.
The visiting Blazers turned up the intensity late in the second half. A shot off a corner kick clanked off the left post by mere millimeters and Seton eventually cleared with 14 minutes left.
Just over 10 minutes later, the Cougars barely cleared another Bush corner.
And three minutes after that, it was time for the Cougars to celebrate.
The win came three days after Seton topped No. 15 Kiona-Benton 5-0 in the first round of the playoffs.
Seton Catholic will put its undefeated record to the test against either No. 3 Bellevue Christian or No. 6 Eastside Prep in a semifinal matchup at Mount Tahoma High School at on Nov. 22 at 1 p.m.
