TACOMA — Drivers and pedestrians in Tacoma were met with a surprise Tuesday night: two horses trotting down the street near a busy intersection.

The horses reportedly got out of their stables in the area of East 72nd Street and McKinley Avenue. Pierce County deputies and Tacoma police were dispatched at 10:46 p.m. to help contain the animals, Sheriff’s Department spokesman Sgt. Darren Moss told The News Tribune.

The horses’ owners showed up and helped wrangle the animals. Officers and deputies tried to block off the roadway so the owners could lasso the animals, Moss said.

The horses ran up to 72nd then all the way south to 82nd Street and McKinley. The owners lassoed the horses at about 10:57 p.m. No one was hurt, and there was no property damage, he said. Deputies were most concerned about the horses hitting a car or vice versa.

Moss said there are deputies who patrol in rural parts of Pierce County that are experienced with wrangling horses or other animals that get loose. This specific incident was different because the horses were loose in a more urban area.
