Weather Eye: Showers continue with chance of thunderstorms, hail

I would say our typical rainy season is well on its way now with a healthy shot of precipitation Sunday and Monday. Showers today before another strong cold front moves in overnight into Wednesday. Expect about an inch of rain before all is done. This also means more snow in the higher Cascades.

We also have a chance of thunderstorms and hail in the next few days. Scattered showers continue the rest of the week, and another good storm arrives over the weekend. The higher ski areas should receive a couple feet of snow by the weekend. The mountain passes will have some slushy snow at times but no real travel problems yet. However, when traveling over the mountains this time of the year, get the latest road conditions as they can change quickly.

Looking at November so far as of noon Monday, Vancouver had officially 1 inch of rain for the month, which is nearly 1 inch below average. I’m betting we will catch up by this time next week. One surprising note is that the warmest and coldest temperatures were recorded on the same day this month. Nov. 7 had a high of 61 degrees and a low of 35 degrees. That is uncommon.

With weather systems coming from the northwest later in the week and weekend if we get any clearing overnight, some colder locations around the county may see a light frost. Highs will be close to average but on the cool side. And did I say more snow in the mountains?

The storm that passes through early Wednesday will have some gusty winds, perhaps 50-60 mph at the ocean beaches and 30-40 here inland. Nothing like the Nov. 13, 1981, windstorm I wrote about in my column in the weekend edition of the newspaper.

I’ll be sharing October rainfall soon from your friends and neighbors around the county so stay tuned. In anticipation of some heavy rain tonight and Wednesday, make sure your gutters and downspouts as well as storm drains in front of your house are cleared of leaves. There’s still plenty of leaves to fall and we could see minor ponding on roadways.

It was nice to see some nice sunbreaks on Veterans Day in honor of our veterans, of course! Stay warm and dry, be safe and we will chat on Thursday.
