More razor clam opportunities begin Wednesday

State Department of Fish and Wildlife shellfish managers have confirmed another stretch of razor clam digging opportunities at Long Beach, Twin Harbors, Copalis and Mocrocks beaches starting Wednesday.

“With some of the lowest tides of the fall season and Thanksgiving just around the corner, this next tide series beginning Nov. 13 is your last and best chance to dig razor clams for the holiday dinner table,” Fish and Wildlife Coastal Shellfish Biologist Bryce Blumenthal said in a news release. “More tentative digs are also planned to begin the day after Thanksgiving for those who want to get outdoors and avoid the Black Friday mall madness.”

The following digs will be during evening low tides: Wednesday and Thursday at Long Beach, Twin Harbors, Mocrocks; Friday and Saturday at Long Beach, Twin Harbors, Copalis; Sunday and Monday, Nov. 18, at Long Beach, Twin Harbors, Mocrocks; and Tuesday, Nov. 19, at Long Beach, Twin Harbors and Copalis.

No digging is allowed before noon when low tide occurs in the afternoon or evening. Most successful digging occurs between one and two hours before low tide.

In fall, beaches still have a lot of sand built up, which can make beach driving hazardous. Fish and Wildlife asks diggers to drive carefully on the uppermost part of the hard-packed sand, avoid wet sand and not park on the beach approaches so as to avoid creating congestion leading on and off the beaches.

The daily limit is 15 clams per person. Each digger’s clams must be kept in a separate container, and all diggers must keep the first 15 clams they dig, regardless of size or condition.
