Hailey Herboth scored 2 minutes, 39 seconds into the second half as the Seton Catholic girls soccer team beat Montesano 1-0 on Saturday to win the program’s first 1A District 4 title.
Herboth’s goal came off an assist from Lilah Chase.
Goalkeeper Hailey Hammerstrom had the clean sheet, making seven saves as the Cougars head into the 1A state tournament with a 19-0 record. They have allowed just eight goals this season.
Seton coach Antonio Buckley said the team’s mindset this season is what led them to the district title.
“We approach every game and day as we have to prove ourselves,” he said. “We don’t talk about the future we talk about what are we doing today. What can we do to get better and put ourselves in a position to win.
“This team is very low key and doesn’t need fanfare or hype. We fly under the radar and like to chase other teams. We talk about climbing the mountain and what can we do to take another step.”
Buckley also said having a group that is so close has been beneficial.
“I coach a lot and this team’s love for each other is so evident,” he said. “They care and are happy for each other to do well. Every day is a great day with them.”
Buckley named junior midfielder/defender GG Lougen and junior forward CJ Moore as his players of the match.
KING’S WAY CHRISTIAN 3, COLUMBIA-WHITE SALMON 1 — Jasmine Carney scored two goals off assists from Anna Osborne, and Shaylie Haij scored with an assist from Brenna Kinnan as the Knights (15-4-1) won to advance to the 1A state tournament.
