Letter: Nation moves backward

Greg Jayne has written a superb column (“It can happen here … again,” The Columbian, Nov. 6). I only wish he had set the hook for his killer close earlier in the column.

He quotes Professor Peter Hayes: “The principal danger from Trump is not that he’ll make America fascist, but that he is making America fail. We are becoming a country that cannot meet the challenges of the present (a pandemic) or the future (climate change). He thinks only about the show and the short term, which is a catastrophic combination.”

I would add at least one more “He is making … ” to the list.

Making us a country reverting to discounting the interests of women, young citizens and all communities of color. Public policies that build on the contributions already being made by these demographics and which promote their potential to do more with their energy, intelligence and public spirit, are of little or no import in a perilous world. This electorate has committed us all to restoring and preserving the power and prerogatives of wealthy, white males (even those born in South Africa or Australia) … forward to the 18th century!

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
