Weather Eye: Get outdoors before damp weather arrives and sets in

It was nice to see a return to blue skies and sunshine Wednesday although walking outside there was still a chill in the air. After all, it is November and so it goes. Enjoy another dry day today and Friday before we once again enter a rainy and cool weather pattern.

Looking at the record book for the first five days of November, Vancouver is running a couple degrees above average and close to an inch below average in the rainfall department. As mentioned earlier, that will change, and I expect some rains to be soaking between Saturday and the middle of next week.

Snow levels will start out rather high when the first storm arrives but as time goes by early next week, the lower Cascade passes should see some snow. Timberline had a little under three feet at the base of the ski areas and by this time next week, they could easily have five feet or more if forecast models hold true. A cool and wet period is in our future.

Meanwhile, do any outdoor chores on Thursday and Friday before the damp weather sets in. With clear skies overnight the next couple of days, expect frost in some areas and fog in others. I still have some nasturtiums hanging on but I will round them up for the season today or Friday while it is sunny and dry.

It is possible in another ten days or so our weather turns cooler and wetter with lower snow levels. If that develops, our foothills may have their first bout of winter weather and some wet snow falling to low levels. That is a way off, so I am only wandering in my forethought.

OK, let’s look at a few bits of old weather lore. “If the leaves of the trees and grapevines do not fall by November 11, a cold winter may be expected.” “Flowers in bloom in late autumn, indicate a bad winter.” Here is one for Monday, Veteran’s Day. “If on November 11 it is fair, dry and cold, the cold in winter will not last long.” Oops, Monday looks wet and breezy so would that forebode a long cold winter?

Enjoy today and Friday and take good care everyone.
