I have concerns regarding Vancouver’s plan to build a “bridge shelter” for 150 homeless people within the established Van Mall neighborhood.
They use a housing first philosophy bringing people directly from street to facility, regardless of drug abuse issues. Will it also attract dealers? The plan includes housing people released from jail who are homeless. Will it become a halfway house for felons?
There are two child care facilities within three blocks of this facility with play areas along 94th Avenue. Facility residents will have to pass these to access the nearest bus stop.
Orchards West Park is across the street from the site. It is the only public playground within walking distance for hundreds of family homes. Will it still be safe?
