Letter: Work to improve postal service

By Thom McConathy, Vancouver
Published: November 5, 2024, 6:00am

Postal service is essential for all of us. We receive and depend on the mail for bills, government notices, correspondence, medical information and essential drugs. We also depend now on the mail for the delivery of our Columbian newspaper and for elections.

Our delivery has become later and later, with one day as late as 8 p.m. and one day skipped this last week.

I am not beating up on the postal carriers as they, too, are frustrated and are being run ragged. It is my belief that the crippling of this essential service has occurred due to executive managerial policies and decisions.

Congress has deliberately isolated the postal service from political influence and oversight, so appealing to our state representatives is of limited effectiveness. I am urging you if you are experiencing this problem to contact your representative and not to take this out on your letter carrier.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
