Letter: Save Carter Park parking

By Chris Dickinsen, VANCOUVER

Carter Park is a little pocket of wonderful located between Washington and Columbia at West 33rd Street. Not even an acre, it is beloved by Carter Park residents, lower Lincoln neighbors and families with young children in our communities. And as much as we’d like it to be so, simply not everyone is able to walk or ride their bikes to get to this great park. Parking is needed.

The 29th and 33rd Street Mobility and Safety Project proposes to remove the stretch of parking along the south side of 33rd Street to add a mobility lane. This will leave only Washington Street for parking adjacent to Carter Park.

There are other ways to make the road safer for all. Slowing down the speed limit would help. Speed cushions located between Columbia and Main would help. A crossing placed at Division and 33rd might slow traffic down. Would sharrows then be an effective compromise near Carter Park with these changes implemented?

It would be great to find a compromise for all of West 33rd Street, but at the very least we need to find ways to maintain parking adjacent to Carter Park. Please Save Carter Park’s parking.
