Letter: Strategies to finance new bridge

Two thoughts as my input for financing the new Interstate 5 Bridge:

Why not start now with speed cameras on both directions of the I-5 and I-205 bridges and collect fines for driving over 50 mph, which will be used toward the expense of the new I-5 Bridge? I am among a small number of people that drive the speed limit over the bridges. This could not only improve on safety, but could also raise some bucks.

In California, when big repairs were done to the Bay Bridge years ago, we understood that increased tolls were to pay for necessary structure repairs. Once the work was paid for on the bridge, the tolls went back down to the original tolls we had to cover maintenance. These kinds of agreements with the public using the bridge made sense and were understandable and easier to swallow. It was a celebration when, collectively, we paid down the expense toll.
